John "Jack" Joseph Hogan, 91, of Clark, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, January 01, 2014.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to the Funeral from the Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark, on Tuesday, January 7 at 9:00 am, thence to St. Helen's RC Church, Westfield, where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4 - 8 pm.

Jack was born in Belleville to James and Elizabeth (Lightholder) Hogan. He was raised by Philip Steinberg of Newark. He has resided in Clark for 63 years.

Jack proudly served his country in the Navy during WWII. He took part in 7 US Invasions in the Atlantic and the Pacific. He also served 18 months of shore duty in Germany, where he was the Manager of the Servicemen's Club. While in Germany he umpired his first baseball game. He was a member of the VFW Post 7363 of Clark.

Jack was an Umpire for over 63 years for various Union County leagues, fondly known as "Lo Ball Hogan", umpiring over 8000 games in his career. He was a Co-Founder of the Clark Little League. He also served as a Basketball Coach for the Union County Special Olympics.

Jack was a Printer for The Newark Evening News, The Newark Star Ledger and The Daily Record for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was also a former Vice-President of the Typographical Union Local 3 in Newark.

Jack was the beloved husband for 67 years, of Rosemary (Morrissey) Hogan and the devoted father of Sharon Bierwirth and her husband Joseph of Clark, Ellen Hogan Rotella of Scotch Plains, Dennis Philip Hogan of Clark, Patricia Hogan McAndrew of Clark and the late Rory John Hogan. He was the cherished grandfather of Dr. Robert J. Bierwirth and his wife Dr. Kristen Bierwirth, Michael H. Rotella and his wife Lisa, Michael J. Bierwirth, Meghan R. Drew, Ryan H. McAndrew, Shaun D. McAndrew, John P. Hogan, Daniel A. Hogan and Kaitlyn F. Hogan and great grandchildren, twins, Kimberly A. and Joseph R. Bierwirth and Kelly M. Rotella. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Bengtson of WA and his brother Edward Hogan and his wife Lynn of CA and many nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his sisters, Grace, Marie, Rose, Christine, Doris and his brother, James.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in his name to the Clark Volunteer Emergency Squad, 875 Raritan Rd., Clark, NJ 07066.
