Harold B. White

Harold B. White, 96 of Clark, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 6 at his home.

Born in Jersey City, he lived most of his life in Clark and is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Florence Hyatt White, his devoted children, Alva Dunn, Janice Peins, Ellen and her husband Frank Gallagher, Sandy Barbarich, and daughter in-law, Beverly White. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Harold and Gary, his lifelong friend, John Haney and two sons-in-law, Jack Peins and Tim Dunn and grandson, Timmy Dunn.

A World War II POW, Harold was captured in Eckternach near Luxenberg and survived several long marches between stalags towards the end of the war. After his liberation he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He received the Bronze Star and POW Medal of Honor for his service. He remained a member of the American Ex-POW organization throughout his life.

A tradesman, Harold worked for over 30 years as a welder and a burner at J. Rich Steers in Jersey City. A leader and proud union member he also served as a shop steward. After retirement he built two houses with his son. An avid singer, Harold was a member of several barbershop choruses and quartets. In 1987 he received the barbershop "Singer of the Year" award from the SPEBSQSA and in 1997 a 50 year membership award.

A family man at heart he will be sorely missed by his children, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 9 from 4-8 pm at Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at the Funeral Home at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
